Frequently Asked Questions About KidStart in Victoria.

KidStart is a one-on-one volunteer mentoring program for children and youth facing challenges at home, school, or in the community. Mentees are paired with an adult volunteer mentor for 2-3 hours each week to develop a supportive friendship. The goal is to build confidence and provide fun opportunities through a consistent relationship.

Referrals are accepted for children and youth ages 6-18 living in Greater Victoria. Children must be referred by a professional such as a school counsellor, social worker, or police officer.

Mentors and mentees do a wide variety of activities together, with a focus on low-cost or no-cost options. Popular activities include swimming, skating, indoor rock climbing, board games, beach walks, arts and crafts, and exploring the outdoors. Pairs are matched based on similar interests.

No, families do not have to pay. KidStart is free to access.

Volunteer mentors are thoroughly screened and interviewed by John Howard staff. They must provide references and pass criminal record checks. Mentors are trained in First Aid, reflective listening, and strength-based practices before being matched.

We ask mentors to commit to at least one year. Many relationships last longer, with some continuing into the teen years.
